Grants are given out on a “need’ basis. The fafsa application is the only true grant application that I know of for folks who want to go to college. By filling out the fafsa you are applying not only for federal grants but also state grants. It sounds like you are looking for additional money, which would be scholarships, not grants.

Okay, here’s the deal I’m pushing 30, have little to no income. and no kids. I’m thinking of joining the navy or going to a community college, but I want to go to college regardless. The financial aid and aquiring grants seem to confuse me some. I’ve been told, for someone like me(little to no income, late 20′s), can pretty much go tho college for free. How exactly do I go about doing this? Should I go for a Pell Grant or some other grant? I assume I need to fill out a FAFSA before I can be considered for any grant of any kind? I’m getting desperate/ left behind here and I don’t think I want to join the navy if I can go to college for next to nothing Right now.

I recommend waiting a year to qualify for the most in financial aid because you probably missed the community college’s and state financial aid deadlines. You need to fill out the FAFSA form to qualify for a Pell Grant. It is based on a percentage of your income and savings. The help can come in the form of Pell Grant, state grant, student loan, and college scholarships.
